Parents Become Students During a Math in Focus Workshop at Valley Stream Union Free School District 13
The Valley Stream Union Free School District 13 recently hosted an informational session on its newly implemented K-6 Math in Focus program.
Valley Stream, NY (December 15, 2016) – The Valley Stream Union Free School District 13 recently hosted an informational session on its newly implemented K-6 Math in Focus program. The session, which took place in the James A. Dever Elementary School auditorium, gave parents an opportunity to experience the various components of the school’s comprehensive math curriculum.
“Math in Focus is our newly implemented program for grades K-6,” said Judith LaRocca, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at Valley Stream U.F.S.D. 13. “Our teachers have been attending professional development workshops to further understand the program, and we wanted to offer parents support as well. It’s beneficial to our student’s academic development when educators and parents work together to assist them in learning.”
Math in Focus concentrates on supporting the goals of the Common Core State Standards for mathematics and balances conceptual understanding, visual learning, and problem solving.

During the event, parents took part in a series of math exercises resembling those offered to students as part of the Math in Focus program. The exercises included ones that focused on using concrete, pictorial and abstract learning progression by using tangible blocks to anchor learning in real-world context.
Susan Resnick of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the company which specializes in pre-K–12 education content, including the Math in Focus program, was on hand to walk parents through each exercise.
